Last letter of an unknown soldier who fell in Gaza
Dearest Rivka, My love for you is endless...
REPOST: I felt it was appropriate given the current Matziv.
EDIT: I was able to pull it off!!!!!
I got an actual audio version of the song.
Here it is (lyrics below):
Enjoy!!!!
I had the idea for this when I heard the song “Dearest Sarah” by the incredible band Goodnight, Texas.
It is the same format as their song, and I want to make sure they get credit.
Their song is about an unknown soldier in the Civil War about to go into battle, writing a letter to his wife.
Mine is the same.
An unknown Israeli soldier going to war.
For we are still at war.
And it is easy to forget that this is still happening.
This is not about politics, ideologies, or ego.
This is real people, real families, and real pain.
I’m working on an audio. But I needed to share the lyrics for now.
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Dearest Rivka, I must write before the night gives way to day,
The convoy waits, I hear the engines call.
My hands are weak with trembling, yet I’ve one last thing to say,
I may never see our precious home again at all.
My father fell on Yom Kippur, though he never learned the psalms,
His prayers were only thanks in simple speech.
And though his Torah was not mine, I carry what he taught,
That every breath is gratitude within our reach.
Refrain:
Oh Rivka, should I not return, hold fast, be strong, live on.
Raise our sons to bless Hashem and sing His holy song.
Teach them trust, teach them faith, though the night may hide the sun.
To love all of our people, every single one.
Oh Rivka, my love for you is endless,
Oh Rivka, my love for you is endless.
I know too many evenings you stood waiting by the door
while I was far away on duty’s call.
Forgive the missing hours, forgive the nights I swore
I’d be back, yet left you bearing all.
But Rivka, in your kindness you gave me more than gold,
And blessed me with a family full of light.
So teach the boys to cherish what cannot be controlled,
That trust in God can pierce the darkest night.
It is my obligation when the walls are under threat,
To stand between the danger and the flame.
This battle is Hashem’s, but He placed in me the duty yet,
To shield His people, and sanctify His Name.
I fight because our children must sleep safely through the night,
Because our fields deserve the sun’s embrace.
I guard the holy city and the candles shining bright,
So every Jew may pray in freedom’s space.
Tell our boys their father’s journey may end upon this sand,
But trust in God is stronger than the sword.
Though the night is heavy, His mercy is at hand,
The soul finds rest when leaning on the Lord.
And if the Holy One decrees my body falls to dust,
Remember, love does not decay with flesh.
And if Hashem should keep me deep beneath this ground,
My spirit will still whisper you my name.
Final Refrain:
Oh Rivka, should I not return, hold fast, be strong, live on.
Raise our sons to bless Hashem and sing His holy song.
Teach them trust, teach them faith, though the night may hide the sun.
To love all of our people, every single one.
Oh Rivka, my heart is bound beyond the grave and still,
For the One who guards His people guards me still.
Oh Rivka, my love for you is endless,
Oh Rivka, my love for you is endless.
Oh Rivka, my love for you is endless,
Oh Rivka, my love for you is endless.
Oh Rivka, my love for you is endless,
Oh Rivka, my love for you is endless.
Some inspiration for me even doing this was , , and others here.
While I may not agree with you completely on everything, you all helped me think deeper about what is going on in our homeland.
Thank you
